Special Refuse collection arrangements

Some changes are necessary to normal Thursday and Friday collection days in both the Christmas and the New Year week. This will result in collections in both weeks being changed. Collections may be a few days earlier or later than normal.

Detailed notification of these changes will be placed on your bin prior to the festive period if your uplifts are affected

There will be no collections on:

  • Thursday 25th December
  • Friday 26th December
  • Thursday 1st January
  • Friday 2nd January

Collections normally due Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of both weeks will take place on normal uplift days.

In addition to making use of recycling bins and bring sites, householders are encouraged to recycle excess materials by visiting community recycling centres throughout the holiday period.

Real Christmas Trees will be collected for recycling from Monday 5th January 2009. These will be uplifted on the same day as we collect your brown (garden waste) bin. Please cut up your tree and add it to any garden waste by placing it in your brown bin. Please put out your brown bin for collection by 7am on the dates specified in your calendar already provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Click a question to see the answer.

Can I have a bonfire in my garden to dispose of garden waste?

Yes, you can have a bonfire in your garden, provided it is controlled and does not become a nuisance to neighbours. However, the statutory nuisance provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 allow the Council to serve a notice on a person causing a nuisance to neighbours from bonfires. Bonfires can be very irritating to neighbours and the smoke, smuts and smell can prevent them from enjoying their gardens, opening windows or hanging out washing. It is recommended that you inform your neighbours before any burning activities are carried out. Alternative methods of disposal which are less environmentally damaging (like composting or shredding) are preferable.

What happens to the recycable waste?

Waste from the brown bin is composted at West Lothian Recycling in Addiewell. The compost is used within the council for grounds maintenance or external forestry.Waste from the blue bin is sent to a local materials recycling facility. It is separated using a combination of automatic and manual methods before each separate material is baled and sent on for reprocessing into newspapers, and a variety of plastic and metal products. We aim to improve our service by expanding the range of materials we collect for recycling.
