Tourist signs
Providing clear direction signs to visitor attractions is a very important aspect of making a visit as pleasurable and relaxing as possible. However, a balance needs to be struck between providing signs and minimising sign clutter and environmental intrusion. West Lothian Council will consider applications for tourist signs against the following main criteria:
- Attractions must be recognised by VisitScotland (tel: 01463 723040)
- Signs will normally only be authorised from the nearest main road - usually the nearest 'A' class roads.
- Attractions directly fronting main 'A' class roads would not normally be eligible for tourist signs.
- Accomodation and catering establishments will not normally be eligible for tourist signs if they are in towns with tourist information centres.
Tourist signs are white text on a brown background and, as with all road signs, must comply with national regulations. The council's Road Safety and Traffic Management team can design the signs or they can be designed by a specialist consultant for approval by the council. An application form is available to download below.
If signs are approved, the costs of design, manufacture, erection and maintenance of the signs will be the responsibility of the applicant. Applicants will need to enter into an agreement with the council before signs can be erected.
