Instrumental Music Service
School pupils in West Lothian are eligible to apply for free instrumental music lessons, delivered during the school day, by teachers working for the Instrumental Music Service.
The lessons are provided in most secondary and primary schools and the pupils taking part are also given opportunities to play with one of the many bands and ensembles that perform outside school hours at a range of different events and venues.
The many benefits for pupils learning to play a musical instrument include improved listening and concentration, discipline, co-ordination, language development, memory and social skills. It also helps children to become part of a team.
Lessons are free but there are costs involved in buying music and some equipment. The instrumental music service aims, within available resources, to provide opportunities for pupils in all primary and secondary schools. The children are selected by skilled instrumental music instructors based in the school.
All the way through instrumental music teaching children are encouraged to get better by testing themselves, playing in groups after school and sitting external music exams.
