Schools - breakfast clubs

Breakfast clubs run before school and provide young people with a free or subsidised breakfast.  However, clubs not only offer a nutritious breakfast for all pupils - they include activities such as games, art and crafts, physical activity and toothbrushing.

The Clubs provide breakfast for children who might start the school day without having eaten.   They help to reduce lateness or poor attendance and improve attitude, behaviour and motivation to learn.

Healthy choices are offered, providing the opportunity for children to sample and develop preferences and eat healthily.

At present there are 30 breakfast clubs in West Lothian, 29 of which are in schools and the remaining 1 is held in a family centre for children from Our Lady of Lourdes Primary, Blackburn.   They serve 600 children with 112,000 breakfasts per year.

The West Lothian Breakfast Club Programme is a partnership project between The West Lothian Food and Health Steering Group and Education Services.

Breakfasts are delivered by West Lothian Catering Services or school staff.
