Buying Your House
Right To Buy Your Council House
If you have been a council tenant for at least two years (or five years if you became a tenant on or after 30th September 2002) you are likely to have the right to buy your home at a discount.
The amount of discount depends on how long you have been a tenant. The level of discount has been reduced for those tenants who gained the right to buy on or after 30th September 2002.
You can obtain an application form and specific advice and guidance (including frequently asked questions leaflets and explanatory leaflets about the right to buy scheme) from your local housing office or customer information centre.
There are also two reference leaflets published by the Scottish Government which contain useful advice;
- Your Right To Buy Your Home - guidance on eligibility and discount including a step by step guide to buying your home
- Thinking About Buying - advice on obtaining a mortgage, appointing a solicitor, common repairs and responsibilities
