Whitburn - Fairtrade Town
http://www.fairtrade.org.uk (new window) The Whitburn group held its first meeting in May 2006 and are now one of four Fairtrade Towns and one Fairtrade Village within West Lothian which is now a Fairtrade Zone. Like the other Fairtrade groups they have worked hard, and were delighted to be awarded their Fairtrade Town status in summer 2007 and were successful with their re-application for Fairtrade Town status which was granted in 2009 and are now about to re-apply for Fairtrade Town status once again in 2011 to fulfil their obligation to re-apply for Fairtrade Town status every two years.
The Whitburn group's Fairtrade work began before their first meeting however, when the members from four local churches joined together during Fairtrade Fortnight in 2006 to hold a joint Coffee Morning for Fairtrade. Recognising there was something more they could do, the individuals decided to formalise their commitment to Fairtrade and establish the Whitburn Fairtrade Steering Group.
