Emergency planning resources
The Civil Contingencies Act 2004 (new window) sets out a framework for emergency planning in the United Kingdom and established a clear set of roles and responsibilities for local responders.
The Act designates the council as a Category One Responder and this means that our duties include the following:
- Assessing the risk of emergencies occurring and using this to inform contingency planning;
- Put in place emergency plans;
- Put in place Business Continuity Management arrangements;
- Put in place arrangements to make information available to the public about civil protection matters and maintain arrangements to warn, inform and advise the public in the event of an emergency;
- Share information with other local responders to enhance co-ordination;
- Co-operate with other local responders to enhance co-ordination and efficiency; and
- Provide advice and assistance to businesses and voluntary organisations about business continuity management (Local Authorities only).
There are a wide range of further information sources (new window) available or you can access more information using the menu on the left hand side of the page.
During an emergency, information will be made available to the public as quickly as possible, via the local media and the Lothian and Borders Alert website (new window) .
