Education maintenance allowance
The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) became available nationally from August 2004 to eligible young people staying on in fifth and sixth year at secondary school or Further Education Colleges.
EMA is an allowance of up to £30 per week, depending on household income. Household income is assessed in the same way as for Inland Revenue Working Tax Credits. Students estranged from parents or in care of the authority will be paid the maximum amount. The weekly allowances payable are:
Annual household income up to £21,835 - £30.00
Between £21,836 and £26,769 - £20.00
Between £26,770 and £32,316 - £10.00
Over £32,316 - Nil
