Copies of birth, marriage and death certificates can be obtained from your local Registration office.  A fee may be payable for this service with details available on our main birth, marriage and death page within the downloadable documents section.

Do I need ID to obtain a copy of my birth certificate?

No, you do not need proof of ID (although it is advisable) in order to obtain a copy of your birth certificate, but you must be able to give full details of when and where you were born.

No, you do not need to attend in person to obtain a copy of your birth certificate. Obtaining a copy of a certificate incurs a small fee.

I am adopted. How can I get a copy of my birth certificate?

An extract or abbreviated certificate of an entry in the Adopted Childrens Register may be obtained from General Register Office for Scotland on payment of the appropriate fee. The applicant must be able to provide the child's name (after adoption), the date of birth, names of adopters and if possible, the date of the adoption order. Note that an extract or abbreviated certificate does not show the names of the birth parents.
