Licences - Hackney carriage (taxi)

The Council no longer restricts the numbers of taxi licences so anyone may now apply for a taxi licence and subject to a mandatory background check and a suitable vehicle being certified as complying with the taxi conditions, a licence may be granted.

Taxis within West Lothian currently comprise a mixture of different type of vehicles. The council revised its policy in relation to suitable taxi vehicles in June 2009.  Any vehicles being licensed or replaced must now be on the approved list and comply with the accessibility standard. Non compliant vehicles will be phased out by 31 January 2015. Information regarding suitable vehicles is found in the guidance notes attached to the application form. Please read the guidance notes attached to the application form and the hire conditions relating to taxis which are both available to download on this page before completing and lodging your application.

Applications must be determined by the council within 6 months of receipt. However, the most applications are dealt with in a shorter period.

Licence fees:

  • Initial grant (one year) £321.00
  • Renewal (one year) £291.00
