Gardens flourish despite summer washout
Another excellent crop of entries - that's the verdict on West Lothian Council's annual gardens competition.Judging of this year's popular contest has now been completed and the area winners have been selected.
Best premises award went to Derek Scott of Ashcroft Farmhouse, East Calder; and Mrs Kirsty Leonard, 1 Springfield Grange, Linlithgow won the wildlife gardening category. Michal and Malcolm Muszynski, 6 Willowdean, Bridgend won the best vegetable garden category.
The Oatridge College Award for horticultural merit was won by Adam Davis, 40 Westcroft Court, Livingston Village. The winners of the best flower garden, best Livingston garden and the over-all West Lothian Gardener of the Year title will be announced at the prize giving ceremony on Friday 7 November.
This year's judge George Gilchrist from Oatridge College would like to compliment all participants for the high standard of gardens entered in the 2008 competition. This was despite record-breaking rainfall with over twice the amount of rainfall falling in the build up to the competition.
Sunshine over the period was also in short supply making it a challenging time for both gardens and gardeners alike. Competition organiser Colin Bell thanked George and all entrants for their hard work. He said: "We look forward to welcoming the winners at the prize ceremony. Once again a big thanks to everyone who entered the competition for their participation, time and effort."
