Discussions over Post Office closures

Post Office Limited is in the process of closing up to 2500 offices in the UK with the adoption of 500 outreach offices, which is part of a national network reform programme.

On the 19 August Post Office Limited announced which offices they are proposing to close in the Edinburgh, the Lothians and the South of Scotland area. Three Post Offices in West Lothian are affected, Breich, Polbeth and Newton.

A six-week public consultation period on the proposed closures began on the 19 August and responses are to be sent to Post Office Limited by 29 September.

Executive councillor for development and transport, Martyn Day, said: "West Lothian Council are firmly against Post Office closures and they will not be supported nor tolerated unless there is a service improvement, which can be demonstrated and supported by the community.

"A special Policy Development and Scrutiny Panel was arranged on Monday 1 September to discuss the network reform proposals.

"Officers from Post Office Limited and Postwatch Scotland attended the meeting and representatives from Post Office Limited outlined the network reform proposals and the criteria for closing branches.

"Elected members were given the opportunity to raise concerns with Post Office Limited and seek answers to specific issues they had. The council will be submitting a response to the proposals and encourages other agencies, community organisation and individuals to submit comments as well."
