Residential care for young people

The council has a total of four residential units for young people - two in Livingston and one each in Bathgate and Whitburn - which provide accommodation and care for young people aged, usually, between 12 and 18 who cannot remain at home with their families for a number of reasons.

  • where possible, young people will be allowed contact with their family
  • all young people will be involved in a 'care plan' which sets out how they will be cared for in the unit and also which school they will attend
  • all young people will have a room of their own

The aims of the service are;

  • to provide residential care and support for as long as necessary (and also on a respite basis) to young people who can no longer stay at home
  • to help them improve and develop family and other relationships
  • to help with education and other areas of need
  • to advise and support families if necessary
  • to staff the residential units with appropriately qualified people
  • to offer access to independent advice or support if required
  • to work with young people and their families to help them return home or to live independently
